About Me

Paulo Novais is a Full Professor of Computer Science at the Department of Informatics, in the University of Minho, Braga, Portugal and a researcher at the ALGORITMI Centre in which He is also the header of Synthetic Intelligence Lab (http://islab.di.uminho.pt/), and the coordinator of the research line in “Ambient intelligence for well-being and Health Applications”. From the same university, he received a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2003 and his Habilitation in Computer Science in 2011. He started his career developing scientific research in the field of Intelligent Systems/Artificial Intelligence (AI), namely in Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, Machine Learning, and Multi-Agent Systems. His interest, in the last years, was absorbed by the different, yet closely related, concepts of Ambient Intelligence, Ambient Assisted Living, Intelligent Environments, AI and Law, Conflict Resolution, and the incorporation of AI methods and techniques in these fields. His main research aim is to make systems more intelligent and also reliable. He had supervised several Ph.D. and MSc students, namely: 11 Post-doc; 22 PhD completed (4 International, 18 national) 9 PhDs in ongoing 121 Masters Coordinator of LASI - Intelligent Systems Associate Laboratory. Former president of APPIA (the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence); Senior member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers); Chair of the Computational Intelligence chapter, IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) – Portugal Section; Member of the IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing) - TC 12 Artificial Intelligence. Chair of the Working Group Intelligent Agent - WG12.3, IFIP - International Federation for Information Processing, Technical Committee TC 12 – Artificial Intelligence. Member of the Working Group Artificial Intelligence Applications - WG12.5, IFIP - International Federation for Information Processing, Technical Committee TC 12 – Artificial Intelligence. Member of the ISO (International Organization for Standardization), ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42, Artificial intelligence. Member of the executive committee of the IBERAMIA (IberoAmerican Society of Artificial Intelligence). Editorial Board member of several journals and book series, namely: Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments, book series, IOS Press. He has served as an expert in institutions such as the EU Commission, FCT (Portuguese agency that supports science, technology, and innovation), and A3ES (Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education). He received several international awards for his research, namely: Best Paper Award, OL2A 2023; IBM Award of Scientific Excellence, PAAMS 2022; Best Application Paper Award, DCAI 2020; IBM Award of Scientific Excellence, PAAMS 2019; Best Application Paper Award, DCAI 2019; Best Application Paper Award, ISAmI 2018; Best Application Paper Award, EPIA 2017; IBM Award of Scientific Excellence, PAAMS 2017; Best Paper Award, Agreement Technologies, 2016; Best Student Paper, PECCS 2015; Best Ph.D. Student paper PRO-VE 2009.
