About Me

Joaquim Macedo is an Assistant Professor with a Definitive Appointment in the Informatics Department of the School of Engineering at the University of Minho, Braga, Portugal. Develops his research activity at Centro Algoritmi as an Integrated Member. Joaquim Melo Henriques Macedo was born on May 19, 1958, in Dundo, Lunda Norte Province, Republic of Angola. He did Primary and Secondary Education between Dundo and Luanda, Angola. He completed Secondary Education at Liceu Mutu ya Kevela (formerly Salvador Correia) in 1978. In 1983 he completed his Degree in Electrotechnical Engineering, Telecommunications, and Electronics with an average of 16 points at the Agostinho Neto University (UAN), Luanda, Angola. In 1985 he concluded the Informatics Branch of the same Course with an average of 17 points. The Informatics Branch was developed within the scope of the EDDI Project, in a partnership between the Faculty of Engineering of UAN and several Portuguese Universities. In 1988 he joined as a Trainee Assistant in the Department of Informatics, School of Engineering, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal. Since then, he has been linked to the Computer Communications Group, teaching chairs related to Computer Networks. In 2002 he completed his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering in the area of ¿¿Information Retrieval. He has lectured both in the area of Computer Networks and Information Retrieval as an Assistant Professor in undergraduate and graduate courses in Computer Engineering, Telecommunications and Computer Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering. He was a Visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Angola for 10 years, where he taught in the Degree in Computer Engineering. At the University of Minho, Prof. Joaquim Macedo guides and guided undergraduate, master, and doctoral students in R&D projects mainly in the area of ¿¿Computer Networks and Information Retrieval. He was part of a working group that was the basis for the launch of the Portuguese Academic Network based on TCP / IP. He participated in the management of the network's early years. Managed and installed in several Portuguese Universities the first E-mail service based on X.400 still running over X.25. As part of this pioneering activity on the Internet, he published with a group of colleagues one of the first books in Portugal to disseminate the Internet. In the research component, he was responsible for two projects within the scope of the Portuguese Academic Network: Directories X.500 and representation in the European Project Paradise, related to public key infrastructures supported by X.500. He was also responsible for the NetCensus Project, hired by the Science and Technology Observatory of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Portugal. He has also participated in several national and international projects financed by FCT and the European Commission. Within the scope of his R&D activity, Joaquim Macedo has been concerned with providing services and transferring technology to the industry and was a proponent and participant in some projects at Agencia de Inovação and IAPMEI. In this context, he was the scientific proponent of the Community Network Project (CORED) financed by the Innovation Agency. Lately. he has also worked on projects on the use of ICT for developing countries, namely network architectures for locations without infrastructure Tolerant Networks for Delays, and Cloud Computing, for small and medium-sized companies. Furthermore. has been working on projects for the use of mobile devices in healthcare provision. Additionally, Prof. Joaquim Macedo has participated in projects related to the Teaching of Informatics, in collaboration with the Education Institute of the University of Minho and with the Informatics Institute of the Federal University of Goiás, in collaboration with Prof. Ana Paula Ambrósio. From 2015, Joaquim Macedo participated in two projects between the University of Minho and Bosch and EU project managed by Vigo University.
