About Me

Joao L. Afonso is Full Professor of the Department of Industrial Electronics, of the Engineering School, at the University of Minho, in Portugal. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1963. He received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1986 and 1991, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in Industrial Electronics from the University of Minho, Portugal, in 2000. He received the Habilitation degree in Electronics and Computers Engineering - Disciplinary Area of Power Electronics and Energy, from the University of Minho, in 2016. He has been with the Department of Industrial Electronics of the University of Minho since 1993. He was the Director of the Department of Industrial Electronics from January 2017 to January 2021. He teaches the following curricular units: Electrical Machines; Power Quality and Active Power Filters; Renewable Energies and Electric Mobility; Power Electronics for Smart Grids; Environmental, Social and Economic Sustainability. He is coordinator and researcher with the Group of Energy and Power Electronics (GEPE), and he is a steering committee member of the thematic line “Smart Cities and People” of the ALGORITMI research center. He is vice-president of the TMOB-HUB - Transportation and Mobility Research Hub, of the of the School of Engineering of University of Minho. His research interests include Power Electronics technologies applied to Power Quality, Active Power Filters, Renewable Energy, Electric Vehicles, Energy Efficiency, Energy Storage Systems, Innovative Railway Systems, Smart Grids, Smart Cities and Aerospace. He supervised with success 17 Ph.D. theses and 74 M.Sc. theses. He has participated as researcher in 32 projects, and has coordinated 21 of them. He is co-author of 55 papers in international journals with referee, 240 papers in international conferences with referee, and 9 book chapters. In Scopus he presents 284 publications, 3251 citations and h-index 26. In ISI Web of Science - ResearcherID he presents 157 publications, 1738 citations and h-index 18. In Google Scholar he presents 431 publications, 6501 citations and h-index 38. He is IEEE Senior Member since 2016. He is Member of the Editorial Board of the journal MDPI Energies, Member of the Topics Board of the journal MDPI Electronics, and Member of the Editorial Board of the journal EAI Endorsed Transactions on Energy Web. He has been Guest Editor of 13 Special Issues of Journals. He has worked as general chair of the EAI international conferences GreeNets 2018, SESC 2019, SESC 2020, SESC 2021, SESC 2022 and PESE 2023. He is on the lists of the “World’s Top 2% Scientists” for the years 2021 and 2022.
