João L. Afonso is Full Professor of the Department of Industrial Electronics, of the Engineering School, at the University of Minho, in Portugal. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1963. He received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1986 and 1991, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in Industrial Electronics from the University of Minho, Portugal, in 2000. He has been with the Department of Industrial Electronics of the University of Minho since 1993. He is the Director of the Department of Industrial Electronics since January 2016. He teaches Electrical Machines, Complements of Power Electronics, Electrical Energy Systems, Power Quality, Active Power Filters, and Renewable Energy. He is coordinator and researcher with the Group of Energy and Power Electronics (GEPE), and he is a steering committee member of the thematic line “Smart Cities and People” of the ALGORITMI research center. His research interests include Power Electronics technologies applied to Power Quality, Active Power Filters, Renewable Energy, Electric Vehicles, Energy Efficiency, Energy Storage Systems, Innovative Railway Systems, Smart Grids and Smart Cities. He supervised with success 14 Ph.D. theses and 67 M.Sc. theses. He has participated as researcher in 32 projects, and has coordinated 21 of them. He is co-author of 51 papers in international journals with referee, 237 papers in international conferences with referee, and 9 book chapters. In Scopus he presents 218 publications, 1807 citations and h-index 20. In ISI Web of Science – ResearcherID he presents 147 publications, 1026 citations and h-index 15. In Google Scholar he presents 377 publications, 4136 citations and h-index 31. He has worked as general chair of the EAI international conferences GreeNets 2018, SESC 2019 and SESC 2020. He is Associate Editor of the journal IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, Member of the Editorial Board of the journal MDPI Energies, Member of the Topics Board of the journal MDPI Electronics, and Member of the Editorial Board of the journal EAI Endorsed Transactions on Energy Web.
