Sérgio Gonçalves (PhD) is a Junior Researcher at the ALGORITMI Research Center, University of Minho (Portugal), integrated in the Industrial Electronics (IE) R&D Group and working within the Control, Automation and Robotics (CAR) R&D Lab. He holds a Master's degree in Industrial Electronics and Computer Engineering (2011) and a PhD in Electronics and Computer Engineering (2022) with specialization in Instrumentation and Electronic Microsystems, both from the University of Minho. His doctoral research, titled "New Generation of Interactive Platforms based on Novel Printed Smart Materials," laid the foundation for his current work in innovative Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Sérgio's academic path includes a nearly year-long stay at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Bangkok, Thailand, where he completed and defended his Master's thesis, gaining valuable cultural and academic insights. During his PhD, he further broadened his expertise through short-term research stays at BCMaterials in Bilbao, Spain. Since 2012, Sérgio has been actively engaged in research focused on novel forms of HCI through Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs). His work leverages advanced technologies such as printed electroactive polymers, smart materials, and printed electronics, culminating in groundbreaking platforms, including the hybrid book—a physical paper book enriched with digital functionalities. Currently, Sérgio continues to develop his research in HCI at the University of Minho, while also supervising undergraduate students and teaching part-time. His work has been recognized with several distinctions, including the prestigious World Technology Award in Entertainment (2013). His research contributions have been featured in peer-reviewed publications, international conferences, and media outlets, including interviews on Porto Canal and Exame Informática (via SIC Notícias).
