About Me

José Carlos de Sá is an associate professor at the School of Engineering of Porto (ISEP), part of the Polytechnic of Porto (P.PORTO), Portugal. He began his career in higher education in 2006. In 2016, he started collaborating with ISEP as a visiting professor and joined the institution’s academic staff in 2020. He holds a PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Minho and is an Integrated Researcher at LAETA – Associated Laboratory for Energy, Transport and Aeronautics, based at INEGI – Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. In 1998, he undertook a semester-long ERASMUS mobility program at the University of Galway, Ireland, where he completed his final undergraduate internship in Production Engineering, focusing on Quality, Safety and Environmental Management. The work was carried out at the university in close collaboration with several Irish companies, providing him with an experience that combined academic rigour with practical application in an industrial context. In the same year, he began his professional career as a junior consultant, embarking on a professional journey spanning more than 25 years of experience in Quality Management, Production Planning and Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, Lean Management, and Operational Excellence. In June 2015, he obtained the Specialist Title in Quality Management, awarded by the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo following public examinations before a jury of recognised academic and scientific merit, with a structure and level of rigour comparable to doctoral examinations. This qualification, regulated within the Portuguese higher education system, recognises professionals with more than ten years of relevant professional experience and significant contributions within a specific field of expertise. Throughout his professional career, he has held leadership positions in Quality Management, Production, Continuous Improvement, and Safety within a publicly listed Swedish multinational company, subsequently assuming the position of Industrial Director at a large Portuguese company. He has also worked as a Senior Consultant and Trainer across organisations from a wide range of sectors and has taught as a Visiting Professor at several higher education institutions. His career has been characterised by a strong connection between industry and academia, with a particular focus on understanding the real challenges faced by organisations and the people who work within them and on transforming scientific knowledge into practical solutions that support process improvement, people development, and the sustainable competitiveness of organisations. He is a member of the Executive Advisory Board of the Shingo Institute, an international advisory body dedicated to promoting the principles of the Shingo Model, organisational culture, and Operational Excellence. He is frequently invited as a Keynote Speaker at international scientific conferences and has received several awards in recognition of the impact of his scientific and academic contributions. He serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Technological Sustainability, is a member of the Editorial Board of Safety, and is part of the Editorial Board – Editors team of System Safety: Human – Technical Facility – Environment. His research focuses on the transformation of organisations through the integration of Lean Management, Lean Six Sigma, the Shingo Model, Operational Excellence, Industry 5.0, Sustainability, and Organisational Culture, with particular emphasis on the role of people, leadership, and organisational behaviours as critical factors for sustainable and human-centred industrial transformation. He is co-author of more than 140 scientific articles indexed in Scopus (h-index = 30), with more than 2,300 citations.
