About Me

Fernando Romero holds an M.A. in Technology Policy and Innovation Management from the University of Maastricht (NL), and a Ph.D. in Science and Technology Studies from the University of Manchester (UK). He is at the Production and Systems Department (Industrial and Technology Management Group), and at the ALGORITMI Research Centre (Industrial Engineering and Management Group, Economics and Management of Engineering Systems Research Team), at the University of Minho. The main research interests are in the areas of University-Industry-Society Relations, Technology Transfer, Innovation Systems, Technological Systems, Technology Management, Science, Technology and Innovation Policy, Research Evaluation and the relation between Innovation and Quality. He is the author or co-author of more than one hundred publications in journals, books or conference proceedings, asides from other works which include technical reports and other articles for technical magazines. He has been involved in several international and national research projects whose funders include the European Commission or the Portuguese funding national agency, Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT). He serves as a regular reviewer for several prestigious scientific journals and conferences, and is a member of several organisation and scientific committees of international conferences, including IEEE conferences, which have periodic editions. He also organized several seminars and workshops. He supervised or supervises approximately thirty plus master students, of which twenty five concluded, ten plus doctoral students, of which eight concluded, and two post-doctoral students. He was the host scientific supervisor and co-supervisor of several Erasmus students. He took part in many M.Sc. and Ph.D. evaluation commissions. Teaching activities involve bachelor, master and doctoral program courses in the areas of innovation management, innovation theory, technology and strategic management, organization, project evaluation, cost engineering and research methodology in several engineering and other courses. He was involved in several extension activities, including training in non-academic organizations, consultancy, contribution to the creation and operation of academic initiatives that support student entrepreneurship, and panel member of several local or national invention competitions. He has also been an invited lecturer at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) and at the Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo (IPVC). He was a research fellow of the European Commission. He has held several management positions, including member of the University of Minho Academic Council, member of the Department of Production and Systems Executive Committee and Director of the Master Course in Industrial Engineering. He is member of EASST (European Association for the Study of Science and Technology) and of EUROSCIENCE.
