About Me

Celina Pinto Leão is an Associate Professor of Numerical Methods and Applied Statistics at the School of Engineering, University of Minho (UMinho), Portugal. Celina is a researcher at the Algoritmi Research Centre in the "Systems Engineering and Operational Research (SEOR)" group. Her research interests are in Numerical and Statistical Methods in Engineering, Quantitative and Qualitative Techniques in Engineering, and applying new methodologies in the learning process of Numerical Methods and Statistics in Engineering. Recently, she has been interested in analyzing and using statistical models for decision-making and occupational safety as a support tool, particularly for risk decisions, design of experiments, data collection and analysis in device development, and gender studies. Committed to innovative teaching approaches like Challenge-Based Learning and Service Learning, she aims to enrich students' learning experiences and practical applications in engineering. Celina holds a PhD in Engineering Sciences from the University of Porto and a Master's in Industrial Mathematics from Glasgow Caledonian University/University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Masters in Industrial Management and Engineering at UMinho. Celina has been the leader of two national externally funded research projects in Higher Education and Science Policy, a member of five national externally funded research projects in the field of Numerical Methods and Statistics, and a member of one European-funded research project in the field of Gender Equality. She also participated in multidisciplinary projects, with the collaboration of colleagues from different departments of the School of Engineering, UMinho, developed with and for students (Serious Game to Enhance Students' Learning of Statistics, leader; and ICTs in engineering education: application of new methodologies in engineering education and assessment, team member). She has been the supervisor of several MSc and PhD theses. She is currently supervising a doctoral thesis, in collaboration with the Federal University of Paraíba (Brazil), on "Spaces in the Context of Diversity: comfort and Well-being in the Performance of Remote Activities during the Pandemic." She participates in scientific and organizing committees of international congresses and is a reviewer for international journals. She is a member of ASME (since 2011), IEEE (since 2010) and IEEE WiE-Portugal (since 2011), as well as a founding member of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (SPEE), since 2010. Founding member of the affinity group of IEEE WiE Portugal (Women in Engineering, Portugal), she was the chair during the 2018-2019 biennium. Fellowships: 2010, Short-term Gulbenkian Fellowship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, a postdoctoral researcher at the Federal University of Paraíba, Brazil, "Development of Educational Games to Support the Teaching of Statistics"; 2009-2010, Lifelong Learning Programme/ERASMUS, at the Slovak University of Technology, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information in Bratislava; 1998-2001, Ph.D. fellowship.
