About Me

Carlos Alberto Caridade Monteiro e Couto was born in February 1950 in Mozambique, graduated in Electrical Engineering (1972) from the University of Lourenço Marques (Mozambique), obtained Master and Doctor degrees from the Institute of Science and Technology of the University of Manchester. (UMIST) from the United Kingdom in 1979 and 1981 respectively, and in 1994 obtained Habilitation (Aggregation) at the University of Minho. He began his academic career at the University of Lourenço Marques in November 1972 and since 1976 has been with the University of Minho. Having started his career as an Junior Lecturer, in 1976 he became Lecturer, in 1982 Assistant Professor, in 1986 Associate Professor and in 1995 Full Professor. In November 2010 he retired being since October 2013 Emeritus Professor at the University of Minho. He was founder of the Department of Industrial Electronics (1989) and proponent of the degree in Industrial Electronic Engineering of the University of Minho (1988). He has taught and developed research in Instrumentation, Power Electronics and Automation and Robotics, areas that integrate the large domain of Industrial Electronics. From beginning 1991 to the end of 1999 he was Coordinator of the Engineering Department of UTAD (University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro), where he launched the research line in the Applications of Electronics and Information Technologies for Agriculture. He has coordinated or participated in several projects targeting national and international funding, in which he guided 51 undergraduate internships at the University of Minho, 28 Masters and 26 PhDs, all completed. He participated in academic career juries (50+ Aggregations, 112+ PhDs and 104+ Masters ). He also participated in several juries of academic career contests, namely in 52+ for Associate Professor and 14+ for Full Professor. He has authored over 200 publications, most of them in journals (> 30) or in international conference proceedings, and a book published by the Open University (Portuguese). He is co-inventor of two international patents. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), having served on the governing bodies of the Industrial Electronics Society (IES) from January 1998 to December 1999 as a member of the Administrative Committee (AdCom), from January 2000 to December 2001 as Editor-in-Chief of the Newsletter from January 2002 to December 2003 as Vice President for Conferences, from January 2004 to December 2004 as Vice President for Technical Activities and since January 2005 as a member of the Administrative Committee (AdCom) where he became a senior member in November 2006. He organized several international scientific events and was General Chair, namely ISIE97, ISIE2003, IECON2009. ISIE2015, all from IEEE, APCA Control 2000 - Portuguese Association of Automatic Control, and SAAEI - Annual Seminar on Automatic, Industrial Electronics and Instrumentation.
