Marcos Martins completed a PhD in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the University of Minho (UM) in 2013 financed with an individual FCT grant working in Ultrasonic Wireless Broadband Communication System for Underwater Applications. Between 2011 and 2016 he was an invited Assistant Professor at Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e
do Ave (IPCA). In 2013 he participated in the project “SIMPE- Interactive Multitouch Surfaces based on Electroactive Polymers” as researcher, working with electroactive materials. In September 2014 he started to teach as invited Professor at UM, dedicating himself exclusively to teaching for a year and a half at the IPCA and UM, simultaneously. In March 2016 he left teaching at IPCA and wins an individual postdoc FCT grant in cooperation with the Laboratory of Robotics and Engineering Systems (LarSys) at Instituto Superior Técnico de Lisboa (IST) and Center for Microelectromechanical Systems (CMEMS) at UM to develop an underwater wireless acoustic modem with streaming video capabilities. In 2016 he also integrated in the NEXTSEA, an IB-S project to develop the next generation coastal monitoring systems in a global change scenario. In 2017 he strengthened his collaboration with the IB-S by becoming an active member in the search for funding. Nowadays, he is a member of the Jury of Proef-dstelecom/IB-S Chair. During this period Marcos Martins has published 18 peer-reviewed Scopus indexed publications, 4 patents and 1 book. He also presented in national and international congress 10 oral communications, 5 workshops as invited speaker and 3 poster communications. He has been supervisor of 12 Bachelor's degree students, 9 MSc (2 ongoing) and 1 ongoing PhD. He has collaborated in 10 national funded projects and was PI of 3 IAPMEI and COMPETE projects. He regularly reviews articles for Sensors (ISSN 1424-8220), IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Remote Sensing (ISSN 2072-4292), Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control (ISSN: 0885-3010), Applied Acoustics (ISSN: 0003-682X), IEEE Access (ISSN: 2169-3536), Ocean Engineering (ISSN: 0029-8018), Ships and Offshore Structures (ISSN: 1744-5302) and International Journal of Polymer Science (ISSN: 1687-9422). He was invited as external advisor for the defense of 1 PhD thesis plan, 6 MSc and 13 Bachelor's dissertations. In 2017 and 2018 he was hired by European Commission to evaluate the Innovative Training Networks (ITN) of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions. Recently, he has received funding once more as PI under the MIT-FCT Exploratory Project. The project aims to develop a new class of deep-sea soundscape autonomous device. In 2018 has submitted as Co-PI 2 Fundo Azul projects, 1 PT2020 Co-Promotion R&D Project and 1 FCT-Israel bilateral research project. Currently, he is preparing an application, along with its partners, for the MIT Flagships and the R&D Circumnavigation Voyage – 2019 FCT Projects, concerning deep-sea exploration.
