    ProfessorOperations ResearchUniversidade do MinhoPortugalJosé Manuel Vasconcelos Valério de Carvalho is a Professor of the Systems Engineering and Industrial Processes Group (ESPI), Department of Production and Systems, School of Engineering, University of Minho. He holds a PhD in Production Engineering, with a major in Operational Research, University of Minho, and a

    MSc degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, as a Fulbright student.He has taught the courses of Operational Research, Stochastic Models of Operational Research, Project Management, Operations Management, Simulation, Combinatorial Optimization, and Integer Programming. He also lectured in doctoral and master's degrees as a guest at several foreign universities. He supervised or co-supervised 7 postdoctoral students and 12 phd students, several of whom were awarded national and international awards.His main area of research is large-scale integer programming and its application in areas such as cutting and packing, network system design, and operations planning. He has been involved in European Projects, as WorkPackage coordinator, and in National Projects, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), as coordinator. He is the author or co-author of about 50 publications in journals listed in the ISI Web of Knowledge. He was the Coordinator of the Systems Engineering, Optimization and Operational Research (SEOOR) Line and the former Line of Systems Engineering, Algoritmi Research Center (these Research Lines were evaluated in 1999 , 2003 and in 2007, as Excellent by the International External Evaluation Panel of the Algoritmi Research Center, which obtained the rating Very Good).He was Director of the Department of Production and Systems, Director of the Doctoral Program in Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Director of the Master Program in Industrial Engineering.He has acted as external evaluator of several international and national funding agencies (as NSERC, FONDECYT, ANI and A3ES) and as a member of Habilitation Thesis and PhD boards, both nationally and internationally. He was President of APDIO (Portuguese Operational Research Association) and member of the External Assessment Committee of the Operational Research Center (CIO) of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.More information at http://pessoais.dps.uminho.pt/vc/
