Joao Monteiro is a full professor at the Department of Industrial Electronics since 2007.He began his career at the University of Minho in October 1980 as Assistant Trainee after obtaining, in the same year, the degree in Electrical Engineering and Computers from the University of Porto, Portugal.He completed his PhD
in Informatics and Systems Engineering - specialization in Computer Engineering - in 1991 and the Habilitation in 2003 both at the University of Minho.In the academic field he lectures Courses in the fields of Signal Processing, Communications and Digital Systems and Microprocessors.Always privileging research and development for industrial application, was since 1991 responsible or researcher of several R&D projects supported by FCT (Portuguese), ADI (Portuguese) and by FP7 (European funding)and industry supported.Since 2009 he is the coordinator of the group of Embedded Systems (ESRG - Embedded Systems Research Group), one R&D research Line of Industrial Electronics Algoritmi Center. (http://algoritmi.uminho.pt/research-teams/esrg/).He has supervised already more than a dozen doctoral students, some of them faculty members of different departments of the School of Engineering national and international Universities.He co-authored or authored more than an hundred published articles.He was pro-rector of the University of Minho from April 2005 to October 2009. Within these functions he coordinated various central services. The functions of pro-rector still included supporting the Rector and Vice-Rectors in the liaisons with local authorities, R&D interface institutions and coordination of R&D central services.He was the director of the Center Algoritmi since 1998 until 2006 and was reelected in December 2010 (http://algoritmi.uminho.pt) until September 2013. This center covers the areas of Electronics Engineering, Computers and Information Technology, with over 150 PhDs in a total of more than 300 members. The Centre is classified as Very Good and manages projects of several million Euros annually.In 2010 he was elected member of the Scientific Council of the School of Engineering. He was elected Dean of the School of Engineering, University of Minho in April 2013 and took office in May 3, 2013. He was re-elected for another term of 3 years the 15th April 2016 and took office in Mai 13, 2016 until 2 October 2019 (2 maximum terms).
