Estela Bicho (f) (DEng, Msc, PhD, Habil), is Full Professor, at the Department of Industrial Electronics & Research Center Algoritmi (Research line Industrial Electronics/Group Automation, Control and Robotics) at the University of Minho, Portugal, where she is responsible for courses in Nonlinear Dynamical Systems, neural networks, Control and Robotics
and heads the research team on Autonomous Robotics & Dynamical Systems (Mobile and Anthropomorphic Robotics Lab). She was Associate Director of the Research Center Algoritmi (2013-2015). She is also a staff member of the MIT|Portugal joint Program on Advanced Studies in Bioengineering, and has been lecturer at the Hands-on Summer School on Neural Dynamics Approaches to Cognitive Robotics, supported by eu-cognition network of excellence. She obtained her PhD degree in Robotics, Automation and Control in 1999 from the University of Minho, Portugal & CNRS, France. Her PhD work received the 1999 Portuguese IBM Honour Award. In 1995–99 she was a member of the ‘Equipe de Dynamique’, at the ‘Centre de Recherche en Neurosciences Cognitives’ at CNRS in Marseille, France. She has been PI, or Co-PI, in several national and international projects (FP5, FP6, FP7, H2020-PT, FCT) in the area of ICT/robotics and health care. Her research focus on single and multi-robot systems, autonomous navigation, Human-Robot Interaction & Collaboration, Learning, Medical Robotics, Uni and bimanual robotic manipulation, and medical devices for the study and diagnosis of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s and desiases. The video entitled “The Power of Prediction: Robots that Read Intentions” which documents the research work on human-robot joint action was nominated for the six finalists of the 2012 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) Jubilee video Awards (http://spectrum.ieee.org/automaton/robotics/robotics-hardware/iros-2012-video-friday) and the results achieved have been considered one of the sucess stories of R&D in Europe (2009-2010, http://staging.esn.eu/projects/ICT-Results/Success_stories.html).She is co-author of more than 80 indexed (e.g. ISI, Scopus) publications in international peer reviewed journals (e.g. Mechanism and Machine Theory, International Journal of Robotics Systems, and conferences, Autonomos Robots, Neural Networks, Robotics and Autonomous Systems) and conferences (e.g. IROS, ICRA). She has a total of 1774 Google Scholar citations (h index of 20, i10 index of 38) and 901 Scopus citations (h index of 14).She has been reviewer/evaluator in service of the European Comission, and has been reviewer in several journals on robotics.
